Dog Arthritis Aspirin

There really is no such saying as dog arthritis aspirin per se. What I mean by this is that the aspirin humans take for joint discomfort is virtually the same as that given for dog arthritis. Most vets will suggest to give baby aspirin to dog suffering from this joint disease. The reason for this is that the full strength aspirin has a tendency to create digestive disturbances and infections in many breeds of dogs.

When giving dog arthritis aspirin, it's important for the pet owner to remember that this drug is capable of killing their pet. I know it sounds almost ridiculous to think of aspirin as a dangerous drug, but I have seen it firsthand almost kill one of my older dogs. We were giving this dog aspirin for several weeks on the vets advise. All was well and he was responding very good to the aspirin we were giving him for his dog arthritis. In fact we were quite pleased with the results. We were giving him a daily dose and it was helping alleviates his pain and he was moving around much more easily than he had been.

But after almost 14 days of getting this dog aspirin he became very ill one afternoon. In fact, I do believe he came very close to dying within a few hours of acting normal. It was determined by the veterinarian at the daily does of dog arthritis aspirin had caused him to develop a very severe gastrointestinal infection. When this happens, bleeding occurs in some of the bacteria in the intestine can migrate into the bloodstream. This can be extremely serious and even cause death in many situations.

However, luckily this dog was able to fight off the infection and became okay. We later learned that dog arthritis aspirin can often cause bleeding in the intestines resulting in darkened and sometimes very black poop before any ill effects are noticed. We still give aspirin to our dogs who suffer from arthritis but never on a daily basis. We have been doing this for quite a number of years and have found that if we only give the dog arthritis aspirin occasionally, say once or twice a week on the dogs bad days, there are no ill effects experienced by the dogs. We highly suggest pet owners never give aspirin to their arthritic dogs on a daily basis.
