How to Spot Arthritis Symptoms in Dogs
As a life-long pet owner, I’ve had a lot of experience with dogs. As a small child, I tended to gravitate to dogs and thoroughly enjoyed caring for them as well as the unconditional love received just being in their presence. Today is no different – we currently have six dogs of all ages – 3 through 15 years of age. I have started to see patterns in arthritis symptoms in dogs and want to share my experiences.
Just like with people, dogs experience a variety of arthritis symptoms in dogs. What is true for one dog in symptoms and/or treatment doesn’t necessarily work for another. Here’s what I mean using my own dogs for examples.
Storm – A big dog, in his prime about 90 pounds – mixed breed probably Dalmatian and pit-bull. We adopted him around 4 years old in horrible condition (on death’s door) and don’t know anything about his life before that time. But after that time, we nursed him back to health, he was run over by a pickup and trailer, a few serious dog fights, fell into a water well, --- a very active, stubborn, lovable dog. His dog arthritis symptoms begin around 11 years old and included stiffness getting up, down and walking. The arthritis symptoms continued to get worse so that he had trouble hiking his leg and swatting to poop.
Red – Irish Setter – We adopted him around 12 years old. As a puppy, he was trained to be a show dog but for whatever reason he didn’t make the cut. He was given away to a few times and ended up on a farm pretty much fending for himself. We rescued him – covered with ticks on death’s door. Again we nursed him back to health. At 15 year old, his arthritis symptoms in dogs include – weakness in hips and back legs, walking up and down stairs, laying down and getting up.
Katie – mixed breed 40 pounder - probably part beagle. We got Katie when she was about 6 weeks old and 4 pounds. Someone found a litter of puppies on a dirt road – abandoned – Katie was one of them. Now at 15 years old, she has issues jumping on/off the couch or bed, coming back to the house limping after playing hard or running with the other dogs, and stiffness through the hips. She has a tendency to over-do.
Blackie – mixed breed 55 pounder. We got Blackie at about 11 years. Pretty lazy and lived in a small back yard or pen he’s whole life – with little human contact and total lack of exercise. Now at about 13 years old, he has arthritis in one front leg joint – probably due to an injury, a little overweight probably because he still isn’t into much exercise.
All these arthritis symptoms in dogs are varied as are the dogs, but all have been helped by liquid glucosamine.
