The Importance of Routine Home Dental Care for Dogs!

Vets report that the #1 issue for dogs is
Gum/Periodontal Disease.

By two years old, dogs can show signs of gum disease.

Prevention is the key. It is necessary to regularly check your dog’s dental health to prevent serious conditions from occurring. A good home dental routine can actually eliminate the need for professional teeth cleanings from your vet. Start when the puppy is small continuing throughout their lifetime. If you adopt an older dog, of course you have to start cleaning his teath where they are, but be proactive take care of any problems and being a routine home dental care program for dog.

Encourage chewing! Chewing helps remove food as well as prevent the build up of tartar. Giving dog chew dental toys, edible doggy chews and treats, and yummy / fun real bones are the perfect addition to any home routine. These are also great to alleviate separation anxiety and boredom. Dogs are born with loads of curiosity and energy – take advantage of this natural desire to move – both you and your dog will benefit with better overall health.

Brushing your dog’s teeth is the #1 method to
prevention of gum disease.

Many vets recommend 2 to 3 times weekly if your dog’s teeth are healthy – but more often if gum disease is already started. Starting the brushing routine is easiest at the puppy stage – when your dog is more open to new experiences and small so they’re easier to handle. Some adult dogs will not take well to brushing if introduced later in life but don’t give up. Either way, is important to be gentle with short sessions and plenty of praise. Make it a positive experience.

What kind of toothbrush do I use for my home dental care program?
A pet toothbrush has three sides and will more efficiently brush your dog’s teeth than a human toothbrush. Finger toothbrushes are also available for pets can also be used – especially for small dogs. These fit on your finger – are easy to control and great for reaching common problem areas.

Human toothpaste is not recommended for dogs
for a couple of reasons.

#1 – Dogs will swallow the toothpaste and it will upset their stomach.

#2 – Human toothpaste is designed to foam which is not appropriate for pets. Use toothpaste made specifically for pets so rinsing is not required.

Petzlife makes an all natural teeth cleaning solution which is applied to teeth by brush and/or spray. It works to dissolve tartar / plaque quickly and easily without side effects. It also works to maintain healthy teeth to keep plaque and tartar from forming on dog’s teeth and gums. Petzlife is the perfect addition to any routine home dental care for dogs program.

How do wild dogs keep from developing gum disease?

The difference is primarily in the food they eat. Wild dogs are active, hunting for food, and spend lots of time gnawing and chewing on fresh meat – this helps their teeth stay healthy and clean.

Dogs that are domesticated typically sleep a lot more and with closed mouths. During this prolonged sleep, fresh air is not moving around gums/teeth – this encourages bacteria growth. And they are given their food without the “work” involved. Within a few minutes, the food is eaten and very little time is spent chewing on natural bones.

By providing and/or encouraging chewing activities your dog, their mouth is more likely to stay healthy throughout their lifetime. If uncooked bones are not available, there are great chew dog dental treats and toys that do the job. Routine home dental care for dogs doesn’t have to be expensive or time consuming – just routine and effective. Here are a few tips:

Encourage chewing! – not on the couch or chairs – but dog chew dental toys, edible doggy chews and treats, real uncooked bones, etc.
Brush your dog’s teeth!
Be aware that many “soft” foods stick to teeth and encourage bacteria growth!
Exercise and other activities keep air circulating in the mouth!
Proactively take care of any tartar / plaque by using Petzlife

Remember your dog needs exercise and brain stimulation for overall health.
