| Osteoarthritis Symptoms
Contrary to popular belief, there are over 100 different types of arthritis known to the medical community. The most common-by far-is osteoarthritis, a condition marked by cartilage degeneration. Cartilage is the spongy tissue that supports the joints, allowing them to move fluidly and absorb the shock of impact. Osteoarthritis inhibits joints' flexibility, thus making them more prone to wear. When cartilage erodes, joints are left to rub against each other, causing pain.

At first, many people with this type of arthritis may think that this pain is due to overexertion or a sports-related injury, but over time, they may come to realize that they're experiencing chronic joint pain. Pain, especially chronic pain, is an important sign to see a doctor. Not only can your physician help you to pinpoint the source of your pain, he or she will also be able to recommend effective treatment options to help you deal with your condition.
There are several symptoms associated with osteoarthritis. The first-and most obvious-is joint pain. This pain is especially noticeable when the joint is in use. Another sign is soreness in the joints after either overexertion or long periods of rest. Swollen joints-which may or may not be painful-are also common indicators of this condition. If you experience one or more of these symptoms, call your doctor and arrange for an appointment.

When you visit your physician, make sure to describe your symptoms as accurately as possible. You might find it helpful to write down what you want to say beforehand. Your doctor will want to hear about the severity and duration of your pain, along with its location. Joint pain in the same areas of both side of the body is an indication of a rare condition called rheumatoid arthritis, which comes with its own set of treatment options. Depending on your symptoms, your physician may use other diagnostic tools-such as x-rays or blood tests-to make sure that your joint pain isn't due to other health problems.
