Older dogs need special attention as they are experiencing rapid changes in their body and system. Like humans, they need extra care. Make your dog’s life happy and healthy even if he is getting old. Each breed has different life spans. Generally, a seven year old dog is considered middle to senior aged and it would be best for you to seek medical advices from your vet to determine the best health care program for your dog. Every dog, like every human, is different. Here are some signs to observe for as pet ages:
Decreased activity level – the dog tends to sleep longer than the usual, loss of enthusiasm for long walks and loss of interest in playing with the members of the family
Change of skin and coat – dog wounds heal more slowly, allergies are often worsen, infection of intestinal parasite may occur
Organs and immune system lose their efficiency – less able to fight off attacks by virus and bacterias
Hear loss – usually it happens. But you may opt to ask your vet to examine your dog’s ear as other medical problems may rule. If you suspect that your dog does experience hearing loss, use hand signals. Dogs learn and adapt well and it would help to train your dog early in life to comprehend basic hand signals
Vision changes- if you suspect that your dog is experiencing vision changes, make him comfortable by not shifting your furniture so he can still move around the house without getting lost or bumped
Cloudy eyes – as they get old, dog’s eyes often show a bluish transparent cloud in the pupil area. It is but normal and its medical term is lenticular sclerosis. Do not worry because vision doesn’t appear to be affected
Muscles decrease in size and formation – mild loss of muscle mass may be seen with old age. Difficulty in getting up or other problems with moving may indicate arthritis
Tips to maintain your dog’s quality of life
Nutrition – There are now specially developed dog foods available just for senior dogs. Senior dogs’ nutritional needs are very different than puppies
Activity – even senior dogs should stay as physically active as possible. Make sure to have time to walk and play with your senior dog and introduce and give him new toys and/or activities for the his mind
Health – Older dogs develop arthritis. Some joint supplements are already available to help alleviate arthritis pain in senior dogs. Dental health plays a major role as well. Poor dental health may lead to poor eating habits which will eventually lead to poor nutrition
Grooming – continue to brush and clean his coat to help it keep soft and healthy
Environment – keep the environment clean, safe and warm for your dog’s sleep and protection against elements
Just like humans, dogs need considerations and adjustments. Extend their quality of life by making an effort to provide extra emotional support and taking good extra care of them.
